The Świętokrzyskie Region’s economy is mainly based on mining and construction materials production. Business sectors of metallurgy, machines, precise appliance production and food industry also play a vital role in local economy. Development of a number of Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship’s industry sectors has also been fuelled by the “Starachowice” Special Economic Zone since the Zone has been a catalyst for the regional technical potentials. The City of Kielce is also a part of the “Starachowice” Special Economic Zone (SSE). Special Economic Zones are specially designed areas in Poland which offer preferential terms for running business. According to the Minister of Economy’s SSE development plan has been designed to favour and support specific business sectors, i.e. precise mechanics, automotive industry, metallurgy, electronics, wood processing industry, construction materials processing, chemical industry and ceramics, food processing.
Development of modern economy is also enhanced and fuelled with the Świętokrzyskie Innovativeness and Technology Transfer Centre and the entrepreneurial incubator – the Technology Park. This institution associates a few dozens of companies –they are actively involved in innovative technology and solution implementation into various business and industry sectors.
Targi Kielce has proven to be a leading city-forming factor – Targi Kielce’s business activity has largely contributed to the development of the City’s and the Świętokrzyskie Region’s trade fair-related and business-tourism infrastructure. In addition to the new hotel facilities – new restaurants, clubs, sports and entertainment centres, taxi corporations and transport services companies have also proliferated.
A recently established Regional Centre for Science and Technology in Podzamcze near Chęciny is a very important place on the map of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, which bases its development on innovation, advanced science and its popularization. The purpose of this institution is to promote scientific and economic development of the region, but also the popularisation of science through games. The RCST is an entity with a very broad formula. It includes, among others, Science Centre, Biobank, laboratories and investment areas.

The region is characterised by the presence of heavy construction and transport companies as well as military equipment manufacturers. Moreover, the Świętokrzyskie is characterised by a tradition in metallurgy, ceramics and masonry. In addition, rich natural resources promote the production of cement and plaster. The Świętokrzyskie is famous for the largest construction companies in Poland, which prepare and implement projects across the country. Another relevant economic factor in the region is the presence of the Special Economic Zone “Starachowice” SA. in Starachowice (Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency 2017). Agriculture plays also an important role in the regional economy as favourable weather and fertile soil create excellent conditions for agricultural development. In the Świętokrzyskie region the headquarters are seated of large companies such as Kolporter sp. z o.o. (logistics), Celsa Huta Ostrowiec sp. z o.o. (steel manufacturing), Elektrownia Połaniec (energy supply) or NSG (Pilkington) (automotive).
